Piece of paper and a title...
I now have personal proof of what exactly a simple job title is worth, and its rediculous.
So, before I got hired for this job Im at now, I had never worked as an accountant.
I also, couldnt get a call back for a job if I paid someone. I literally sent out 100's of resumes, and maybe got 1 call back per 100. No dice.
So, funny thing. I added one thing to my resume. Staff Accountant.
Just for kicks, and partly because of adverse employment conditions here, I decided to brush off the old resume and put it on a couple job sites.
In two days I received 3 emails, and 3 calls about jobs. I didnt even apply to any, these people actually were seeking me out.
I thought that hilarious, because, my skill set didnt change any........my personality didnt change any......the only thing that suddenly made me desirable from not being able to buy an interview was adding two words and a description to my resume.
Was it neccessary for me to have EVER held that job title to do the work?
Obviously not, because this place hired me without prior experience with that job title, and I can do the job.......
I just find it amazing how much value a couple words can have on ones life.

It's the difference between proven experience and unproven potential.
Someone who has proven experience in a job has obviously gained from real world experience in the position and not just "book learning".
I would imagine that in most peoples eyes, proven experience plus book learning is a plus over either by themselves.
I see where you are coming from.
But in my case, the experience was not neccessary. I was hired as an Accountant at my current position, with 0 experience, and I do an admirable job, but learned little to nothing more here in addition to what I already knew.
So in reality, that experience didnt enrich me at all, yet suddenly, Im more valuable simply for what amounts to a job title, even though my skill base is exactly the same.
