RIP Braves Division Record Streak
I am an Atlanta Braves fan, I have been since the late 80's, and I would just like to be one of the first to say RIP to their all time, all professional sports, record for longest streak of division titles.
I remember where I was at when Sid Bream slid in against the Pirates. We were at my parents friends house, and I was watching the game.
I remember watching the Braves and Twins in the series on a small black and white television on my dresser when I was supposed to be in bed. This was the "worst to first year". I wasnt yet 11 years old.
I remember the WS win over Cleveland in 1995.
The Braves won the division the year I graduated HS.
They won the division the year I got my drivers license.
They won the division I graduated college, both times.
They won the division the year I got married.
Now, thanks to the ownership getting cheapskatitis, our team of castaways, rookies, and young players has ended up in a train wreck, and will end up with a losing record. Thanks for the memories.
After Smoltz, and a young guy James, we are completely devoid of pitching talent. All the best minor leaguers we had have been called up and subsiquently destroyed on the major league level.
Andruw Jones will likely be trade bait to the Yankees or Dodgers due to his enormous salary, and Chipper Jones only has so many years left on his knees.
We traded Wilson Betemit, one of the true rising infield stars, for worthless garbage, who may have possibly replaced Jones, and could spell the constantly injured Giles, or Renteria.
Dont worry though, Im sure there is a few broken down outfielders around with bad histories (such as Renteria or Hudson were when we aquired them), that Atlanta will get for cut rate prices to leave us with a warm fuzzy feeling about losing our Gold Glove 100 RBI outfielder.
Considering we now have the National Leagues version of the Yankees (the Mets figured out that buying every high priced free agent really does win you games) sitting in our division, I dont see us moving very far in the foreseeable future until someone comes along that will put money into the franchise.
Thanks for the memories though. It was fun.
